Subhen Chatterjee was trained in the Lucknow Gharana by Tabla maestro Pt. Swapan Chowdhury and then went on to create his unique styles. He has been accompanying legends in Indian music Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Sm. Girija Devi, Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Viswamohan Bhatt, among many, and worked in International Projects with Peter Gabriel (WOMAD), Paul Horn and David Cosby. His band Karma is eastern India’s earliest Fusion Band. In this episode, Subhen traces those early years, when the Fusion Bands, first Shakti and then Shanti, left an indelible impression on him. Fusion to him, is simply the magic of blending the same seven notes, whether eastern or western, or even the North and South Indian styles in India. Subhen brings to US and Europe, his group Calcutta Quartet. This is not an East-West fusion but a quartet of North and South Indian styles, involving the Violin brothers, Devshankar and Jyotishankar, Subhen on Tabla and ethnic percussion and N. Shankar on Mridangam. Enjoy the aalap with Subhen Chatterjee. (Video footage of India tour of Shakti, mentioned in the episode and Calcutta Quartet videos are available here.)
