On a snowy Valentine’s Day here in North America, we listen to our scientist singer from Montana, Dr. Des Raj in a beautiful Nitin Mukesh number. Arun from India then sings the all-time hit song from the movie Aradhana. We also discuss the various options of listening to our podcast in response to a listener query. This episode features two musical personalities who live on two different sides of the world, grew up in different times and compose music very differently. Both are however blessed with a very supportive family. Awaaz Anjane today lets a father talk about his son and a son about his father. Daniel from Ohio, United States is a prodigious talent on the piano. Winner of many awards, including the Young Composer award, he is trained in Western Classical but as his father, Mr. Subrata Haldar narrates, Daniel explores Indian Classical Music on the piano on his own. Listen to some wonderful renderings from this gifted young pianist. Saptak Sen from Seattle, on the other hand, tells us a fascinating story about his dad Kishore Sen, who in early 1980s in Calcutta, India, surpassed all odds to begin creating computer music. From his rudimentary programs to drive an early-generation sound card, Kishore Sen has come a long way. The one-man-band was featured on the Project 5 website last year. From original compositions to remix of popular old Hindi songs, Kishore Sen will enthrall you with the melody and energy that he pours into each of his creations.

Awaaz Anjane pays tribute to the legend O.P. Nayyar, the rhythm king, who passed away few days ago. While he is no more with us, his music lives on forever. Today’s tribute episode begins with Kaveetaa from Mumbai. She is a prolific writer (read her blogpost on OP) and is connected with the world of art and journalism. While Kaveetaa shares her songs and thoughts on the maestro, Deblina from Japan sings an all time hit song. We also hear from one of the most acclaimed music composers from Pakistan, Sohail Rana, now living in Canada, who reveals a very unique story of his love and respect for O.P. Nayyar and his music. He was the music director of Pakistan’s first Platinum Jubilee film Armaan and then went on to compose many film scores, some very popular songs while working for PTV and represented Pakistan in various international music festivals. His student Mousumi shares her telephone conversation with OP. And our own homage to O.P. Nayyar is through two songs that are everyone’s favorites.
