Meet Pradip Somasundaran, playback singer from Kerala, India and winner of the 1996 Meri Awaaz Suno Talent Search Contest. The coveted prize was the Lata Mangeshkar Trophy and Pradip has already shared that high point of his career with Awaaz Anjane listeners in a previous episode. To the follower of Malayalam music scene, he needs no introduction. Nor does the legions of fans thronging his blogsite on an almost daily basis. And as is common to many other performers featured on Awaaz Anjane in the past, Pradip manages to balance all of this, with the day-job of being a lecturer of electronics. In this episode, Pradip talks to Deb about the behind-the-scenes stories of the Meri Awaaz Suno contest, shares his viewpoints on today’s music contests and reality shows and offers generous tips to all Awaaz Anjane singers. Two beautiful melodies, including the winning song from the contest, and samples from his upcoming music album not only would keep you mesmerized but also brings out the humble, gentle nature of this prodigious talent.

Introducing four new voices. From Atlanta, Georgia we have the singing couple Akshata and Pulikeshi singing the eternally romantic song from Parineeta. To quote them, “…we are blessed to have each other as soulmates who share a common passion for music…”. It is this same passion for music that makes businessman Salim from San Antonio, Texas manage a busy schedule and pick up the mic to sing Kishore Kumar songs. Shashikant from Grand Rapids, Michigan completes this episode with an original classical composition inspired by Pandit Ravi Shankar’s Nat Bhairavi. Shashi not only sings but also uses software to create the accompanying Indian instrument tracks like the tabla, manjira, sitar and the harmonium. We thank all our listeners with whom we have been able to share our own passion of reaching out to the unknown voices as we strive to bring to you more such talents. The coming weeks feature many such unknown and known voices.
Happy Listening!

Awaaz Anjane features Parthiv Gohil and his fusion band Aakruti. A winner of Sa Re Ga Ma television contest and a TV anchor, Parthiv got his major break in playback singing when he sang the bandish in the blockbuster movie Devdas. Solo albums Bandish and Sapnay followed, receiving rave reviews. But as you would learn in this exclusive interview that he gave to Awaaz Anjane, Parthiv wanted to experiment with different genres of music building on his classical base. Aakruti was thus born blending Hindusthani, Carnatic and Western styles. In this episode, Parthiv speaks to us on his musical journey and sings the Devdas bandish and the winning song in the Sa Re Ga Ma contest. Along with his insights on Aakruti, you will listen to couple of fusion compositions, one in Raag Hansdhwani and another in Raag Ahir Bhairav. If you happen to be in New Jersey, USA, you can watch Aakruti live on October 13, 2006 at the Radisson Hotel in Piscataway. For details you may call Daljit at (973) 256-4577.
